John F. Kennedy School (JFKS) has been creating a vibrant community in Berlin and around the world since 1960. With a rich history and a strong commitment to excellence, JFKS has earned its reputation as the Best International School in Berlin.
JFKS is a one-of-a-kind public school with over 1600 German and American students, ranging from Entrance Class through Grade 12. At JFKS, our mission is to provide a top-notch German-American bicultural, bilingual education that upholds the highest standards in Berlin.
Mission That Shapes Responsible Global Citizens
The John F. Kennedy German-American Community School is deeply committed to fostering independent, collaborative, and critical thinking. Our school's philosophy revolves around nurturing bi-cultural, bilingual academic excellence and embracing international diversity based on mutual respect and cooperation. By doing so, we are dedicated to shaping responsible and democratic global citizens. JFKS focuses on equipping students with the skills and values needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Bilingual and Bicultural Excellence
JFKS stands out as a bilingual, bicultural German-American tuition-free public school, offering a comprehensive program for both elementary and high school students. We combine the strengths of both the German and American educational traditions, acknowledging and appreciating cultural diversity. At JFKS, German and English are equally respected as languages of instruction. Our curriculum seamlessly incorporates the essentials of both the German and American school curricula, maintaining high academic standards and promoting various modes of learning.
The balanced curriculum at JFKS covers a wide range of subjects, including the fine arts, humanities, languages, sciences, mathematics, and sports. Beyond the classroom, school trips are an integral part of the educational experience, allowing students to deepen their understanding and acquire new knowledge through direct observation and experiences.
Fostering Independent Thinkers and Responsible Citizens
John F. Kennedy School is committed to guiding students in their journey to understand themselves and the world around them. We promote independent inquiry, critical thinking, open-mindedness, and a strong sense of service to others. Our curriculum and learning strategies encourage the development of responsible, democratic citizens, with a focus on upholding the dignity of both students and teachers at all times.
Elementary School Excellence
The JFK Elementary School, situated in the district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf in the southwestern part of Berlin, is among the most prestigious schools in the city. With five sections of each grade level, from Entrance Class through Grade 6, the JFK Elementary School provides an academically challenging curriculum that combines features of both the American and German educational systems.
Parents choose the JFK Elementary School for its unique bilingual, bicultural education and its multicultural school community. German and American students learn together in the same classrooms, promoting respect, tolerance, and cultural understanding. Instruction is provided in both German and English, with an emphasis on English to immerse students in a bilingual environment. Students are assigned a Mother Tongue and a Partner Tongue, defining their language arts program during the school day.
An extensive range of extracurricular activities is available for students in grades 1-6, allowing children to further develop their talents in music, sports, and academics.
High School Excellence
The JFKS High School Program, accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), offers students the opportunity to earn the American high school diploma or the German Abitur, or both. Students receive instruction in English, except for German language classes, and progressively transition to predominantly German instruction as their language proficiency increases. JFKS students learn both English and German and take mother tongue and partner tongue language courses, allowing for near-native proficiency.
All JFKS courses are college preparatory and lead to a high school diploma. The school offers Honors/Advanced Placements courses, and the language of instruction can be either English or German. High levels of German partner tongue proficiency are recommended for admission to the Abitur natural science program, reflecting JFKS's commitment to academic excellence.
To ensure students succeed beyond high school, JFKS offers achievement, aptitude, and college testing through its School Counseling Department, helping students plan for their future educational and vocational goals.
Discover why John F. Kennedy School is considered the Premier International School in Berlin, offering a unique educational experience that prepares students for success in our globalized world. Join our vibrant community and embark on a journey of academic excellence and personal growth.
